Institute for Muslim Affairs in Myanmar

About Us

Group of people

We are an independent and non-governmental scholarly think tank aiming to promote the issues of Muslim minority rights, highlighting minority participation in the political process of Myanmar with unique strategies and initiatives.

We will follow liberal democratic values and foster the development of multiculturalism in the diverse communities of Burma.

Background

After the 2021 military coup, Myanmar is falling into spirals of conflict and the people of the country are struggling in the spring revolution movement, the most vigorous anti-military struggle in history. The movement's diverse slogans and the political coalition contract of the resistance organisations (Federal Democratic charter) reveal that federal democracy is the answer to the country's long history of political instability.

In Reflecting on the period of pseudo-democratic gradualism between 2010-2020 under the 2008 constitution, the religious minority groups were endangered by the ultra-nationalist pro-military groups, and the so-called liberal democrats failed to protect the human rights values that are vital in a democracy. A glimpse into the rise of right-wing populism in the most developed liberal democracies in countries that the marginalised minorities in countries are at risk by several means.

Francis Fukuyama stated that "This demand for dignity motivates populist voters in Hungary and Poland, who feel that their national identities are under threat from immigration and liberal social values, much as it motivates supporters of Brexit in Britain and of Donald Trump in the United States. It also characterizes the Hindu-nationalist supporters of Narendra Modi in India, who want to base Indian national identity on Hinduism, or the militant Buddhists in Burma and Sri Lanka who feel that their countries' religious identities are under threat." In our knowledge, the quest for basic human rights and minority rights for the diverse minority groups in Myanmar including Myanmar Muslims and Rohingyas is needing to raise in this transitional context and future. The political solution for future Myanmar depends on how to raise the trust and reconciliation between the majority of Burmese peoples, indigenous ethnic minorities, and other minorities in Myanmar including Muslims.
